A web site dedicated to the unique island of

Soqotra (Socotra)

Island of the Dragon’s Blood Tree

Soqotra during World War II.

The island was an important base for the Allies during World War II and these pages provide an historic record of those years when service men served their country from a remote island.

“Soqotra in WWII” is an account by Robert Austin of what day-to-day life was like on a remote island during the War.  The article was sent to me by his sons plus a number of photos of the base.

“Wimpey’s photos” provide a unique record of what the base on Soqotra looked like during the war.

“Fatal crash” details the crash of a Wellington bomber just after it took off from the base. 5 airmen were killed. Photos of the funeral are included.

“Photos from WWII” supplied by the sons of Robert Austin.
