A web site dedicated to the unique island of

Soqotra (Socotra)

Island of the Dragon’s Blood Tree

This is one of many maps that were created by Alain Manesson Mallet in the 1680's.

Early in his career, Mallet was a foot soldier in one of the regiments of the French army. He rose in rank to become a sergeant-major of artillery and then inspector of fortifications. Upon leaving the military he secured a position teaching mathematics and geometry at the court of Louis XIV and authored several books dealing with engineering and science.

As you can see, the map of Soqotra only bears an approximate representation of the actual island. Was Soqotra really surrounded by islands?

Nevertheless, I am very pleased to own the original as it is now over 315 years old!
