This is one of many maps that were created by Alain Manesson Mallet in the 1680's.
Early in his career, Mallet was a foot soldier in one of the regiments of the French
army. He rose in rank to become a sergeant-major of artillery and then inspector
of fortifications. Upon leaving the military he secured a position teaching mathematics
and geometry at the court of Louis XIV and authored several books dealing with engineering
As you can see, the map of Soqotra only bears an approximate representation of the
actual island. Was Soqotra really surrounded by islands?
Nevertheless, I am very pleased to own the original as it is now over 315 years old!
